Pacific Yachting
Service on the Sea Awards
Celebrating those who have provided
innovative leadership and outstanding service to the marine-based
life of British Columbia, as well as those who have demonstrated
courage and bravery in and around our waters. The Pacific Yachting
Service on the Sea Awards is the name given to a public awareness
and fundraising campaign launched in support of the Disabled Sailing
Association of British Columbia.
The awards are designed to recognize
and honour people across British Columbia who have demonstrated
an unflinching desire to make this province’s maritime industries,
businesses, scientific and recreational pursuits among the safest
and most dynamic in the world. The Service on the Sea Awards also
recognize those individuals who have risked their own well-being
while assisting others in moments of need on British Columbia
waters.
The selection process begins with
the receipt of nominations from across British Columbia. The Service
on the Sea Awards Committee, which comprises of volunteers with
outstanding records of service to the province’s maritime
community, narrows the choices down to one or more winners in
each of four separate categories, envisioned as:
•
Environmental Contribution
• Heroism
• Long-time Service
• Creativity and Innovation
In addition, the Awards Committee
will annually select one nominee to be named Disabled Sailing
Association “Commodore of the Year” in recognition
of contributions to improving access to B.C.’s maritime
life for otherwise marginalized individuals.
All nominees are recognized each
year through the presentation of commendatory certificates.
Important to the evenings success
is the help we receive from community volunteers who are called
on to serve on the Event Committee and the Media/Public Relations
Committee. The Event Committee is charged with responsibility
for planning all details pertaining to the evening's celebration;
the Media/Public Relations Committee ensures that as many British
Columbians as possible are made aware of the outstanding contributions
their fellow citizens make each year to Service on the Sea.
